Oden's Ladder was the most memorable run from my 10 years of guiding the best riders in the world through the mountains of the Chugach with VHSG. Johan and I stood on the peak opposite the face shoveling an LZ for a run that we were repeating and shooting "on-slope" shots. I saw the line on what everyone thought was an unridable face. Johan and I looked it over and he agreed that it might go. Hatchet and the boys were not so sure, but were stoked to give it a closer look in the heli. After our fly-by we were sure, but the pilot could not find an LZ on the summit, so we landed on the neighboring peak and Johan and I hiked up the back side. Once at the top, I set up a belay anchor and belayed Johan to the edge to check the drop-in. He liked it, so away he went. In the shot you can see me on the peak (I look like a rock and was about as cold as one) and Johan on his fourth turn/free-fall.
My descent was pretty hairy, as I could not feel my legs from the knees down after the sweaty hike and cold belay position. Victoria Jealouse was at the bottom and pretty much talked me through the line on the radio. Frozen feet and a heavy guide pack on a super steep committed line make for a memorable experience.
Higai truly captured the essence of the moment with this photo!
